Two children have been released from the hospital after a hostage situation overnight on Detroit's east side.

Police tell us it began around 11:50 p.m. Monday. Two men forced their way inside a home in the 700 block of Conner. We're told they took a mother, father and two children hostage.

Police say at some point, the mother and father were able to escape, but the two children were still inside with the suspects. The suspects set the home on fire in an attempt to get away.

We're told one suspect ran from the scene and was tackled by Commander Elvin Barren. That suspect is described as in his mid to late 20s.

It is unclear if the second suspect was able to get away or died in the fire.

First responders were able to rescue the children from the fire. They are now being treated at Children's Hospital for smoke inhalation. Family says Ronald Scott, 4, and Reagan Scott, 2, are currently in critical condition.

Police and fire investigators say the home appears to be a loss.
