Tim Kaine has campaigned in Michigan for the first time since becoming the Democratic vice presidential candidate.

The Virginia senator rallied supporters Friday in Grand Rapids, which he called the "beer city." He also opened a nearby campaign office with Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow and attended a fundraiser.

Kaine say he's fond of Michigan, noting his eldest son's fiancee is from Bay City.

He says his mother told him the last night of the Democratic National Convention was the best of her life. Kaine says it wasn't because she was proud of him but because the party had nominated Hillary Clinton as the first female major-party presidential candidate.

He says men have been helped by "strong women" and it's time for men to stand behind a "strong woman" for president.
