Metro Detroit voters grade President Donald Trump's first 100 days

Posted

President Donald Trump reaches the 100 day mark in office on Saturday.

We wanted to know what local voters think of the job the he's doing.

Two recent polls show President Trump's approval ratings are in the mid-40 percent range.  That's down from 48 percent when he took office in January.

By comparison Barack Obama and George W. Bush had approval ratings of 62 and 63 percent respectively after 100 days in office.

Not surprisingly, we found very mixed reviews--much like the election itself, where Hilary Clinton captured the popular vote but Donald Trump took more states to win the presidency.

Our first stop was Southfield and on a beautiful April evening, it was dinner alfresco for Delaysua Solomon and Shon Bobo.

“In my opinion, I feel like that bomb he dropped what, 2-3 weeks ago, a little extra, and I don't think we're ready for another war of the world just yet, but he did follow through on his word, so I'll give him an A for effort,” says Solomon.

At the nearby Evergreen Hills Golf Course - on the city of Southfield government campus - David Harville didn't mince words with his assessment following his round with friends.

“Everything he's trying to do is wrong. Everything," says Harville. “He's all about himself. And he's got all these people believing that he's really going to do something for this country. Everything he does the courts have to tell him, no."

Then it was off to Royal Oak. Hilary Clinton won Oakland County by nearly 54,000 votes last November. Among those we encountered on Main Street this week was Lauren Hall.

"I would give President Trump a D- and I'm a public educator so I really disagree with Betsy DeVos and all that she's doing in regards to children with special needs," she says.

We also ran into a group of women, who travelled to Michigan from the south this week for a work conference. We interrupted their scavenger hunt - part of a team building exercise - and quickly became part of it.

This group wanted to add their voice to our question. They enthusiastically gave him an A plus.

From there, it was off to Macomb County.  Trump won in Macomb, with nearly 54 percent of the vote to 42 percent for Hillary Clinton.

In St. Clair Shores, voters went for Trump by more than 4,000 votes.

Robert LaFave told me he and his wife typically vote Republican - but not this time.

"I'd give him a D-plus. Everything he's doing, it's just wrong. It's not helping anybody," he says. "Me, I'm on disability, so all this stuff he's doing with this, taking away ObamaCare and all, that is going to screw me up, My insurance is going to go sky high, you know, I can't afford it now with being on disability."

Eighty-three-year-old Bruce Terwlliger lives a few blocks away. He's a veteran. Army Airborne. He told me he's solidly behind the President. His grade--an "A."

"Probably close to perfect for what he can accomplish because of the politics that are involved,” he says. “And he's trying to do everything he promised and I voted for him, I'd vote for him again."

It's an incomplete report card this early, of course, but divided on election day and 100 days into the new administration, voters tell us - by their answers - it's still the case.
