Floyd Nix appeared in court for his preliminary hearing today in Detroit.

Nix is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Davontae Sanford's stepfather Jermaine Tilmon. Sanford served eight years in prison for a quadruple murder before his conviction was overturned.

Tilmon was talking in front of a friend's house in the 3600 block of Chatsworth last November when Nix allegedly shot him while he was holding his hands in the air.

Tilmon was known as a ceasefire advocate. He was credited with saving lives through volunteer mentor work, getting gang members to change their ways.

A judge bound over Nix's case for trial.
