Roy McCalister Jr. won the Detroit City Council District 2 seat over Virgil Smith.
McCalister Jr. snagged 61 percent of the votes with 100 percent of precincts reporting.
Smith was able to run for a city council seat after winning an appeal from state court.
He had agreed not to seek elective office for five years when he pleaded guilty to shooting at his ex-wife's car. But that part of the deal was thrown out by a judge, who said it was unconstitutional.
