Prom dress giveaway in Garden City

Prom can be extremely expensive, especially for young women.

"There are just so many girls that can not afford to purchase a prom dress or the accessories that they need to have,” says Dawn Lafferty, founder of Angels Above Baby Gowns LLC.

And now they don't have to struggle to go to the big dance. The nonprofit Angels Above Baby Gowns is hosting a prom dress giveaway April 9. The event will have dresses, shoes, purses and jewelry -- for free.

“A lot of the girls can’t afford them. They’re very expensive and sometimes it means the difference between being able to go to the prom or not,” says Jennifer McDonald, a volunteer with the nonprofit.

“They feel special. It makes them feel glamorous and confident and they didn’t have to have their parents go out and spend all of that money,” adds Lafferty.

If you want to donate a dress, purse, shoes or accessories to the prom giveaway, you can drop it off in a bin outside 251 Hubbard Street in Garden City. The organization is also looking for anyone interested in teaching makeup lessons. If you can, call Dawn Lafferty at (734) 421- 2322.

The prom dress giveaway is April 9 at Garden City High School, 6500 Middlebelt, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. It's free of charge but the nonprofit is asking for a $10 donation to help with cleaning costs if you can afford to donate.
