The fight to stop a hazardous waste facility from expanding continues.
The Wayne County Commission Health and Human Service Committee will meet today to continue asking the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to halt the expansion of U.S. Ecology.
U.S. Ecology is a hazardous waste processor in Detroit just outside Hamtramck. For more than a year, they've been trying to expand their operation. Now, the county is trying to stop it.
The facility processes some of the industries most hazardous, even radioactive waste.
The MDEQ is currently considering its request to expand by ten times. That would increase their waste storage from 64,000 gallons to more than 600,000 gallons.
Concerned neighbors worry the expansion could lead to ground water contamination.
The meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. on the seventh floor of the Guardian Building.
