Abdelkader, who is entering his eighth season with Detroit, played in all 82 games last year and racked up 19 goals and 42 points.
The 29-year-old, who is a native of Muskegon, signed a new, seven-year contract extension last fall after compiling a career-high 23 goals in the 2014-2015 season.
Abdelkader replaces longtime Red Wing Pavel Datsyuk, who left in the offseason to play hockey in his home country of Russia.
