REDFORD TOWNSHIP (WXYZ) — A Redford Township couple is being charged after their 4-year-old son allegedly shot his 5-year-old sister, resulting in non-fatal injuries.
The shooting happened July 6 around 1:30 a.m. in the 26500 block of Plymouth Road in Redford Township. Police received a call that a child had been shot in the head.
First responders arrived and transported the 5-year-old old girl to a local hospital for treatment.
The 4-year-old boy had found an unsecured handgun belonging to a relative of his parents before shooting his sister, police say.
Jonclaude Norwood Sr. and Melissa Ann Kiser are now charged with two counts of second-degree child abuse.
“All of these cases are tragic," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. " Young, precious lives are being forever altered and even lost, and we can absolutely prevent this. If you choose to have guns in your homes, please make sure that children and teens do not have easy access. It is that simple.“
The couple will be arraigned in court on Monday, Aug. 3.
