(WXYZ) — This became a mission in Detroit and Wayne County 10 years ago when 11,341 rape kits were found sitting on shelves inside a police storage room.

Now all the kits have been tested and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy says the last 600 cases are being reviewed for possible prosecution.

So far, they’ve gotten 197 convictions, 824 suspects identified through CODIS the national DNA database with suspects found in 39 other states.

Today was a celebration of all the people who helped raise millions in private donations and government grants to get the kits tested.

One rape survivor described how she felt forgotten when she heard in 2010 on the news the kits were found with no progress on the cases.

Now, 10 years later, all rape survivors have an online portal where they can log in and see how their kits and their cases are moving forward in the system to make sure this doesn’t happen again
