Detroit police say a 36-year-old man is now in custody after one of his sons was accidentally shot by his other son on the city's east side.
It happened in the 13000 block of Pfent, near Seven Mile and Schoenherr on Monday.
According to investigators, a 10-year-old boy in the home shot his 14-year-old brother. The boys were reportedly at home with their grandparents, while their dad was at work.
"Unfortunately there were boys that age, they started messing around got the guns out, unfortunately one of them was loaded, the 10-year-old pulled the trigger and unfortunately shot his brother,” said Capt. Eric Decker with the Detroit Police Department.
Decker tells 7 Action News, while the guns weren’t left out, they were not properly locked up, and the boys may been actively looking for them.
"They didn't have a lock or secured gun safe or anything like that, they were put away out of your normal reach you know that age 10-14, unfortunately they were originally in a closet pulled them out of there,” said Decker.
Decker said the 14-year-old was rushed into surgery. He was shot in the upper torso and he is in critical condition.
The family is very stressed waiting for answers at the hospital.
"Prayers for the 14-year-old for the family itself, very tragic for everyone involved, unfortunately goes back to not secured properly guns, loaded guns in the house and the safety rules of guns, keep your finger off the trigger,” said Decker.
