DETROIT (WXYZ) — The Ilitch family proudly announced the latest addition to the District Detroit - a new sports medical facility that is a partnership with the Detroit Medical Center and right next to Little Caesars Arena.
But direct questions about broken promises of the vibrant city within the city in the District, with new affordable housing, shopping, retail are only partially answered.
Chris Ilitch told reporters, “I’m aware of the coverage that’s been out there. But I’m so focused on everything we’re working on.”
The Ilitch family owns or controls 80 acres around the arena on Woodward. The Little Caesars new headquarters tower down the street is still not finished. It was supposed to be done last year. There's no explanation about the delay.
Taxpayers funded $285 million for the project and they are among those wanting answers as to why the development is not being done as promised.
Andrew Lapetina lives in Detroit and says, “It’s a little difficult as a taxpayer to accept all this money has gone into these developments and we haven’t seen the results at this point. Yeah, I do think they would have some explaining to do at this point.”
Chris Ilitch says more good things are coming and they have a team to make them happen, but that’s it today.
