Detroit City Council approves jail land swap with Wayne County

Plans to build a new jail complex in the city of Detroit took a big step forward Tuesday.

The Detroit City Council approved a proposed land swap between the city and Wayne County.

The deal would give the city the former American Motors headquarters site on Plymouth Road in exchange for 11 acres of city-owned land.

Under the plan, Dan Gilbert's Rock Ventures would build a $520 million jail and courthouse just east of I-75, near Warren Avenue.

The vote was delayed last week, after a lawsuit was filed to block the land swap.

A judge later dismissed it clearing the way for the vote.

But it's not a done deal. The proposal still needs to be approved by the Wayne County Commission.
