DETROIT, Mich. (WXYZ) — The City of Detroit is looking to regulate short term rentals through sites such as AirBNB.

Council member Janee Ayers is sponsoring the ordinance that is still in the works. Council is discussing whether they should require registration of short term rentals, restrict the number of guests, and how many there are in the city.

They are doing this in response to residents complaining about parties and disrespectful guests renting such homes.

A group of AirBNB owners has started what they call the Share Detroit Fund. They are working to raise money to lobby against regulations.

WXYZ spoke to the woman who owns the Iklectic house on Bagley Street in Corktown with her husband. Mindy Huestis told us on the phone she lives in the neighborhood and makes sure renters are respectful. She says she believes it is her right as a property owner to rent it out.

“I think before they start to do all these regulations they need to go out and talk to the people who are hosts who are doing this to better the city, to bring people into the city,” said Huestis.
