Purse snatchers caught after shooting at police

Posted

Two men are in custody after robbing a woman and engaging in a brief shootout with Detroit police Sunday night.

Detroit police say officers were on routine patrol when they spotted a man in his 20s running with a purse in the area of Plainview Avenue and Warren around 9 p.m. Sunday.

Officers then spotted a second man and tried to approach the pair when one of the men fired shots at officers. Officers returned fire, according to police.

No one was injured.

The men fled on foot down Plainview Ave. and Detroit police officers and Michigan State Police set up a search perimeter in the area. They were able to track down both men within 15 minutes and arrest them.

Detroit police say the men had stolen the purse around 8 p.m. from a woman at a Subway at Telegraph and Chicago in Redford. Redford police say they were not in pursuit of the men at the time Detroit officers spotted them.

Police recovered the suspects' gun and the stolen purse.

Detroit Police Capt. Constance Slappey said the suspects were arrested thanks to the quick and massive police response within minutes of the shots fired.

"You do not shoot at the police officers no matter what agency it is, because that is not what we’re here for. We’re here to do our jobs and protect the citizens of the cities that we serve," she said.

The incident remains under investigation.
