The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) and the Michigan Humane Society (MHS) are partnering for an animal adoption event on the DIA's north lawn on Sunday, Aug. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or until all the animals are adopted.
This is the first time MHS has partnered with the DIA, and it is the first time the museum has hosted an animal adoption event.
"Meet Your Best Friend at the Museum featuring Kitties and Pitties!" features 20-25 cats and dogs, including pit bulls and pit bull mixes, for adoption. The animals have had all their age-appropriate vaccinations and have been sterilized. Adoption fees vary.
As part of the event, the DIA will raffle off private tours of its Conservation Services Laboratory, giving a behind-the-scenes look at how the museum's renowned collection is cared for. The raffle will also include tickets to the exhibition "Star Wars™ and the Power of Costume." Proceeds will be donated to MHS in memory of Cathy Sweier, a DIA staff member and avid cat lover, who passed away this year.
Parking is available in a lot off John R street, directly behind the museum, or at meters on the street.
