As the community prepares to say a final goodbye to fallen Detroit Police Sgt. Kenneth Steil, those who knew him best are remembering how he lived his life.

“My cousin had a wonderful sense of humor,” said Michael Francescutti.  “That’s how he got through stressful times and kept his cool. He never lost his temper.”

Sgt. Steil was tracking a suspect wanted for shooting his own father, when police say the suspect shot Steil.

On the day the 46-year-old was scheduled to be released from the hospital, he died from medical complications.

Steil’s brother-in-law tells 7 Action News, the father of two, was a hero.

“In the hospital he made it clear he was the one who got shot, not one of his guys.” said George Brikho.  “Not once was he upset with he shooter. He forgave the shooter.  We forgive the shooter.”
