An increase in flu cases is prompting the Detroit Children’s Hospital to change it’s visitor policy.
Starting on Wednesday, January 20, only parents, guardians and adults 18 and over will be allowed in the inpatient and observation areas.
The change is due to the increase in flu cases in metro Detroit. Hospital officials said children are more susceptible to the flu and often spread it more frequently.
Doctors across the area are urging people to get their flu shot.
"Oh, it's not too late,” said Azaz Ahamad, a physicians assistant at the Michigan Urgent Care in Canton.
"It's always recommended to get a flu shot, I know some people don't believe in flu shots, still we urge them if possible to get a flu shot,” said Ahamad.
The already busy facility is has seen a steady stream of patients with coughs, fevers, runny noses and more. Many testing positive for the flu.
"We've been seeing quite a bit more this year compared to last year,” said Ahamad.
The Wayne County Health Department has also recognized the uptick in flu cases.
Officials want people to take precautions: wash your hands, cover your cough, go to the doctor if you feel sick and stay home from work or school.
"You have to especially with kids, take the flu seriously, because fatal if not treated,” said Ahamad.
