Former Michigan State basketball star Keith Appling has been arrested a second time for illegally carrying a concealed weapon, sources tell 7 Action News.
Sources say Appling was arrested Saturday morning in Detroit. This comes just over a month after he was arrested in Dearborn for bringing a loaded gun into a strip club.
According to police, they observed a Dodge Charger traveling at a high rate of speed around 1:30 a.m. Saturday near 7 Mile and Hannah. When officers pulled the car over, they saw Appling in the rear passenger seat place a gun under the seat next to him.
Appling's attorney tells 7 Action News that the gun actually belonged to another guy in the car who has a Concealed Pistol License. His attorney said Appling was in the front seat and didn't know the gun was under his seat.
In the first case, Appling was reportedly observed pulling a gun out of the trunk of a car in the parking lot of the Pantheon Club in Dearborn.
Police responded and approached the 24-year-old. Police searched the car and found a handgun under the driver's seat, a loaded assault rifle in the trunk and a small amount of marijuana. He was placed under arrest.
He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, a 5-year felony, possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle, a 2-year misdemeanor and possession of marijuana. He pled not guilty.
The second incident comes just six days before Appling was scheduled to be in court for a preliminary exam for the first case.
