Thousands of students are late to class on Tuesday at the Detroit Public Schools Community District because of an insurance issue with the buses.
2,700 students from 29 different schools were affected, when DPSCD officials found out buses provided by their vendor Safeway are not properly insured to transport students.
The students were about an hour and a half late to class because of the issues.
District leaders worked to find a temporary solution to get these students to class on time.
The DPSCD released this statement about the issue:
The district was notified late Monday afternoon that Safeway Transportation, one of the district's four transportation vendors does not meet the proper insurance requirements to transport students.
Interim Superintendent Alycia Meriweather took immediate action to avoid any disruption of instruction. The Department of Transportation worked with Mrs. Meriweather by soliciting the assistance of the district's three other transportation vendors to identify service for the 67 routes affected. ABC, Trinity, and DHT were pleased to assist.
As a result, 2,700 students across 29 schools were picked up today. However, student transportation was delayed by almost 90 minutes. Parents were notified and provided the transportation hotline (313) 945-8600.
Meriweather thanked the transportation staff who worked an additional nine hours to make the necessary adjustments. This arrangement will be in place through the end of the week and service is expected to be on time.
The district is working to identify a long-term solution.
