The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center is currently alerting patients and family members after they say they suffered a data breach.

According to the center, they have lost an unencrypted flash drive that contained certain patient information. Those patients were treated at Karmanos' Detroit and Farmington Hills locations.

Karmanos says officials have "no knowledge or evidence of fraudulent or criminal activity" related to the missing flash drive, and believe there is "minimal" risk.

Letters about the situation were mailed to 2,808 patients and family members affected on March 10. They are offering a free year of identity protection services to those involved.

According to Karmanos, the flash drive contained only administrative information related to a system upgrade. It was mailed to the center, but when the package arrived, the flash rive was missing. It contained the names of patients, hospital name, Karmanos unique patient numbers and attending physician names. Officials are continuing to search for the missing drive.

Anyone who is affected by the data breach and has been notified can call 844-778-5948. Representative swill be available Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. to assist with any questions.
