Detroit police discovered a massive marijuana grow operation on Friday afternoon on the city's west side.
Initially, police were called to the location on Cloverdale to investigate graffiti. When they arrived, they noticed something was strange.
There was evidence of a new electrical hookup, and they called DTE to investigate. The bust is now also being called the biggest case of utility theft in the company's history.
That's when they found one of the most sophisticated grow operations they have ever seen. We're told the people responsible had an illegal hook up for water and electricity.
They also had 16 commercial air conditioning units inside the building and hundreds of voltage boosters. Officials say the place was set to go up in flames.
The value is said to be over $600,000. DTE says within just a few months, the thieves stole more than $50,000 in electricity.
Officials say they also had taken off the water meter to supply their irrigation system. The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department has not yet been able to put a dollar figure on how much water may have been stolen.
Two people have been taken into custody, including the owner of the building. It's unclear what charges they could be facing.
