Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Demetrius Peals, 22, and Kinesha Boyd, 20, in connection with the fatal shooting of Boyd's 3-year-old son, Kyrei.

On Dec. 6, medics were called to an apartment shared by Boyd and Peals to treat Boyd's son for a gunshot wound to the face.

Kyrei was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

It is alleged that Peal left a loaded firearm accessible to Kyrei while the child was in his care and a resident of his household.

Police say the child found the gun and fatally shot himself. Police also say that Peal knowingly and intentionally tampered with evidence.

It is also alleged that Boyd failed to provide a safe environment for her child and permitted Peals, a person known to carry a gun in the home, to have access to her child.

Police say she is also alleged to have knowingly given a false or misleading statement regarding her child's death.

Peals was charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree child abuse, tampering with evidence and felony firearm. Boyd was charged with involuntary manslaughter and lying to a police officer.
