DETROIT (WXYZ) — The fear of abductions, human trafficking and other crimes in the city has led to a new safety initiative by community organization New Era Detroit.

They are recruiting businesses to become safe havens for anyone who needs help. Zeek is the founder of New Era Detroit

“This is for anyone who is in danger,” Zeek said. “If you see these businesses out in the community that they are somewhere that’s safe.”

New Era Detroit is a community organization meant to keep the city safe.

That’s why they are rolling out with the Safe Zone Detroit.

Businesses with the decals displayed in their window will let people passing by know if they feel in danger to come right in.

“If they see someone frantically running inside their business they understand well I’m a safe haven (and) immediately tend to the person coming in,” Zeek said.

They are recruiting more businesses to participate.

New Era Detroit asks the business owners to call for help and keep the potential victim safe until the authorities arrive. Right now, five businesses put up the decals while 50 others are waiting for theirs.

Zeek says this community effort sends a strong message.

“Putting the people who are committing these crimes on notice too," he said. "When they see that these businesses that are in an area that these are safe havens and people are actually watching.”
