Young child found wandering on I-96 in Detroit

Posted

It's not something you see every day - a little boy walking on the shoulder of the freeway during rush hour.

Michigan State Police say it happened Tuesday around 5:00 p.m. along westbound I-96 near West Grand Boulevard in Detroit.

The boy is 8 years old and he was scared, too scared to get in the patrol car that stopped to help him. His grandmother later told the troopers her grandson is a special needs child.

Troopers were able to talk the boy into letting them walk him home. But when they discovered how far away they were, the little boy decided to get in the patrol car and ride home.

The child was first spotted about a mile away from where he goes to school at Thirkell Elementary. He normally takes a cab home, but his cab driver wasn't at the school. The little boy says his teacher told him to walk home.

Detroit Public Schools released this statement to 7 Action News:

Detroit Public Schools takes the safety and security of its students very seriously. The district has begun a full investigation into this matter and will be be reviewing all procedures regarding the dismissal of students, as well as their transition to and from our care.
