DETROIT (WXYZ) — A gunman is still on the loose after shooting a young mother and what we now know is a two-week-old baby.

The family tells us that the mother is still at a hospital in critical condition.

According to authorities, her baby was grazed by a bullet and is expected to be okay.

The family says nine people were inside the home on the 16000 block of Freeland as the barrage of shots were fired into the home.

The family is still reeling and calling it a random shooting, and says they don't know why they would be the targets of this shooter.

They also say they're now living on the streets because they fear returning home.

There was an overwhelming presence of fear as bullets riddled the home on Detroit’s west side.

The woman we talked to wants to remain anonymous because she fears for her life after a masked gunman opened fire on her front doorsteps.

She says five children under the age of 10 were inside on the first floor.

Sadly, her daughter-in-law and her grandchild got caught in the crossfire of what she says was a random shooting.

“I saw the front door opening, and I saw a bunch of bullets ringing in with my daughter-in-law standing in front of the door with her two-week-old baby in her arms, trying to run back in towards the house,” she says.

She says her 23-year-old daughter-in-law was shot five times. Her grandchild, just two-weeks-old, was grazed by a bullet.

The family escaped with their lives, but are now living in their car, terrified and traumatized.

"I already have real bad anxiety. I was already going in and out of the hospital since October 28th when my son accidentally killed himself,” the woman says. “He had no insurance and he left two babies and a baby on the way behind."

Now, the family is holding on to hope and finding strength through prayer.

“But I have one message. The battle is not mine. It's the Lord's,” she tells 7 Action News. “If he didn't take us then, he wasn't ready.”

The family was renting the home through Section 8 housing. They say they don't have anywhere to go.

That woman also has a 15-year-old son who is with her out on the streets. They have set up a GoFundMe page.

If you know anything about the shooter, you're urged to call Detroit police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800 SPEAK OUT.
