Fellow firefighters, family, and strangers gathered outside Engine 33 on Lawndale on the city's southwest side.

They told stories about 59-year old David Madrigal, the veteran Detroit firefighter found beaten to death inside his home on Vaughn Street Monday night. He was set to retire soon, after putting in more than 25 years of service with the fire department. He was known for his volunteer work.

Madrigal's ex-wife carried around his helmet at the vigil, saving it for her grandson.

Carmen Madrigal told us, "These firefighters do so much for us. He should be respected. I will miss him."

Inside his house, items were missing, including a safe. Investigators also say his car was found torched two days before his son discovered his body.

Lt. James Edwards says, "He probably would have given the person anything he wanted, but now, we will never know."

The 59-year old's cousin addressed the crowd, thanking the community for their support during this difficult time.

Police are urging anyone with information to step forward.
