A water main break created a sinkhole in a neighborhood on Detroit’s west side near 7 Mile between Evergreen and Lahser. It happened just before 9:00 am.
The Department of Water and Sewerage says a 6 inch pipe burst under the pavement at Trinity and Pickford.
The intersection was suddenly bathed in water. A luxury those who live nearby suddenly discovered they no longer had.
“I wanted to wash up and get my self together, you know wash up for work and I couldn't do that,” says Eric Johnson.
Officials say water was shut off for residents living on 1 block of Trinity for most of the morning.
The source of the trouble, was a 6 foot piece of 6 inch pipe which burst and weakened the pavement above creating a sinkhole big enough for a car to fall in.
Detroit Police re-routed neighborhood traffic while a work crew contracted by the city quickly fixed the damage.
By noon the section of broken pipe was replaced, the water was restored to nearby homes and the hole in the street was being filled. Leaving the surrounding pavement looking as dirty as some neighbors felt all morning.
The first thing Eric Johnson plans on doing now that his water is back on?
“I'm about to take a hot rub a dub in the tub,” he says with a laugh.
