Chiquita Keen-Johnston is recovering back at home after being shot at the Detroit fireworks on Monday night.

"It's been horrific .. life altering," she says.

She and her family were about to enjoy the Detroit fireworks when she noticed some young men arguing. She sensed something was about to happen.

As she and her family started to leave, she heard a gunshot and fell to the ground. She'd been shot in her right side.

She says the bullet, which is still lodged there, missed her organs, but hit her ribs.

Doctors told her she was very lucky.

Detroit Police say no one is in custody for the shooting, but they are "getting close".

Keen-Johnston says people need to understand that resolving issues with guns is not the answer.

The family has set up a GoFundMe to help Chiquita out while she recovers.
