Brighton Police warn drivers to give pedestrians right of way in crosswalks

Posted

As we mark the first day of summer, there is no doubt many are out and about enjoying the sunshine. Brighton Police say it is a good time to remind drivers give pedestrians the right of way in crosswalks.

We’ve all been there: waiting for car after car even though we have the right of way.

It happens all the time along Brighton’s popular, therefore busy Main Street. We watched it happen to several people.

“We rarely cross here because it is dangerous,” said Larry Shock as he walked along Main Street.

“I have heard of people getting hit, right actually at this corner,” said Kathleen Prout.

Kathleen Prout works at one of the great restaurants between Main Street and Mill Pond Park. She says drivers sometimes seem to have less respect for people - than for the ducks and geese that love the pond.

“People stop more for the geese than they do for kids and people trying to walk across the street,” said Prout. “Geese run this town pretty much.”

Brighton Police say they will be enforcing the law.  Under state law pedestrians have the right of way in crosswalks, even if it isn’t at a light.  Violating the law is punishable by a $130 ticket.
