Sinking boat found; Macomb Co. man still missing

Posted

Sheriff's deputies in Macomb County and Sanilac County have a mystery on their hands after a boat was found sinking in Lake Huron this week. That boat has been linked to a missing man from Macomb, Michigan who was not found with the boat.

The boat, identified by the Sanilac County authorities as a 31-foot Sea Ray Sundancer cabin cruiser, was spotted by the crew on a freighter as it moved through Lake Huron. The U.S. Coast Guard then found the boat with about six feet of its bow sticking upright out of the water.

Authorities believe someone tried to intentionally sink the 31-foot boat.

The boat's registration number allowed deputies to trace it back to a 60-year-old man who was reported missing last Tuesday, September 1, 2015.

On Tuesday of this week, the boat was towed to shore and drained.

"The initial investigation reveals that the vessel was intentionally attempted to be sunk," said a statement issued by the Sanilac County Sheriff's Office. "Still missing from the vessel is a 60-year-old man from Macomb, Michigan, who originally was reported missing on September 1, 2015," the statement said.
