New outrage in battle over proposed mosque

Posted

Members of the Council on American Islamic Relations say they're angry and disappointed with the ugly behavior of a large crowd outside Sterling Heights City Hall last night.

Hundreds gathered for a planning commission meeting on a proposed mosque that was unanimously voted down.

Dawud Walid of CAIR claims Muslims were spit on, others had lewd comments screamed at them, while some had their head scarves pulled at.

The crowd was filled with a cross section of residents, including Chaldeans.

Samira Abdallah, 21, tells 7 Action News an older woman spit in her face, after she left the meeting Thursday night.

She says, "It hurts that so many people have that much hatred for you."

Martin Manna of the Chaldean Chamber of Commerce says healing has to happen. He says so many Chaldeans have gone through some much pain, but adding it doesn't excuse any ugly behavior.

In regards to the actual meeting, CAIR says it's filing a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice. The group feels the planning commission violated a religious land use act.
