A Clinton Township family of 7 received some much needed help from a total stranger.
The Stone family has been struggling lately. Christy Stone and her husband have 5 kids. The youngest two, Troy and Tyler, have muscular dystrophy.
Troy must be on a ventilator and was recently hospitalized.
"We've been going through a lot. We got behind on a lot of stuff," says Stone.
That included the power bill. A couple of weeks ago, while Troy was at home, the power was cut off.
Stone had to call 911. She has batteries for the ventilator, but they only last a few hours.
Clinton Township firefighters responded and firefighter Ryan McCuen started talking to Stone. That's when he found out the power was shut off because the family had a $1,000 bill that needed to be paid.
"I said 'I'd like to take care of it.' We took him (Troy) to the hospital and I called DTE," says McCuen.
"My first reaction? I gave him a hug and said thank you!", says Stone.
Thanks to that help from McCuen, the power was turned back on and Troy was able to come back home.
Stone says she's now working with DTE to make sure their power isn't shut off again.
A few days later, Stone stopped by the fire department with a card and cookies for McCuen.
7 Action News was there today as as McCuen stopped by the Stone home to give Clinton Township Fire Department t-shirts to Tyler and Troy.
McCuen says deciding to pay that bill, was a no-brainer.
"You just have to see what we saw. You have to want to help this," he says. "If we can make it a little bit better, that's all we're trying to do."
Three months ago, the Stone family set up a GoFundMe page because they're trying to buy a generator in case of power outages or other issues. If you'd like to know more and help out, here's a link to that site: https://www.gofundme.com/ssa9ruw4
