Two of the three homes condemned in the wake of the Fraser sinkhole will be demolished beginning on Friday.
It is expected to take a couple of days each to demolish the homes.
The demolition was announced in a news release from Macomb County, and is being called a major turning point in the recovery following the collapse of the 15 Mile Sewer Interceptor.
“Demolition of these homes is the beginning of the process to replace the damaged interceptor and repair the sewer line,” Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice S. Miller said in a news release. “The work done to this point has primarily been about creating a long-term bypass system to allow sewage to flow around the damaged interceptor, while ensuring that we do so in a way that is safe for people and for the environment.
The demolition comes ahead of work next week, where crews will dig a 300 feet long, 25 feet wide, 60 feet deep shaft to provide access to repair and replace the collapsed interceptor.
Fixing the 11-foot diameter interceptor is expected to wrap up in September, with the job being completed with the repaving of 15 Mile Road by Thanksgiving.
