His family says he was celebrating the fact he was about to become a father at a baby shower when an unimaginable chain of events took his life.

The St. Clair Shores Police Department says officers were called to the Lakeland Manor Banquet Hall on Harper Avenue near Ten Mile on reports of a man with a long gun.

When they arrived, they believed Theoddeus Gray, 29, had a gun.

Investigators say he ran, shot a canine officer pursuing him, killing the dog. He then was shot and killed.

Gray’s family is not convinced. They do not believe he had a gun. They think he is a victim of mistaken identity.

They say they believe the police were trying to find some people who were asked to leave the baby shower.

Gray allegedly went outside, according to family members. He was addressing an argument, during which he was asking the people involved to leave.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office is now investigating to find out what happened.

Action News asked the sheriff if there was any indication the wrong person was shot and killed.

He said he would not be commenting at this time. It could be two weeks before the investigation is complete.

A makeshift memorial now stands outside the police department in honor of the dog.
