Texting, talking on a hand-held phone, self-grooming and eating: those are some of things state and local law enforcement say they’re cracking down on in a new initiative called “Operation Ghostrider.”
Michigan State Police say a ghost law enforcement officer will act as a passenger in an unmarked car and when you’re caught in the act, they’ll radio a marked police unit to come and ticket you.
MSP says it’s all a response to Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April.
Officers from Sterling Heights, Shelby and Clinton Townships, along with the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office are all part of the effort.
Michigan State police says it’s more vital now than ever. They say they expect to see a 50 percent increase in traffic crashes as a result of distracted driving.
