Mom sentenced to life for murder of newborn

An Eastpointe woman whose newborn baby was left to die in a cold garage was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday.

A jury last month convicted 25-year-old Angela Alexie of murder.

Investigators say Alexie gave birth in a garage in Eastpointe, Michigan, shortly before Christmas in 2014. The boy died in the garage, and his body was discovered at a recycling center.

Prosecutors say Alexie chose a cowardly way of getting rid of the child. Her lawyer has said that involuntary manslaughter was more appropriate, but the jury disagreed.

"I don't know what to say, I didn't mean for it to happen," said Alexie at her sentencing.

She also admitted to having a history of drug abuse.
