New lawsuit filed to stop construction of controversial mosque in Sterling Heights

Posted

The city of Sterling Heights is facing a lawsuit over its decision to allow a group to build a mosque on 15 Mile.

The lawsuit accuses Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor of squashing debate and violating the right to free speech during a public hearing last month.

At issue: The city's approval of an out-of-court settlement with the Justice Department.

It accused Sterling Heights of discriminating against the religious freedom of a group seeking to build a mosque on 15 Mile.

The lawsuit also claims approving the consent order violates city zoning laws.

It was filed by the American Freedom Law Center, a conservative group based in Washington D.C. that's part of the anti-Sharia law movement.
