Macomb County Clerk Karen Spranger can’t seem to catch a break.
Newly elected, she is under fire for how she runs her office, is facing a lawsuit from two former employees, was fined for violating ethics rules, and crashed her county issued car hours later.
Now, her home is under scrutiny.
The 7 Investigators had gotten tips weeks ago that Spranger might not be staying at her listed address in Warren.
When we visited last week, she was still getting mail there, but neighbors had not seen her in forever and the car in the driveway never moves, they say.
Here is why it matters.
Spranger swore in writing the Warren address was her home when she filed to run for office. If she can’t prove it, she would be in violation of state law and could face prison.
We caught up with her at her office today.
“That is my residency,” she said of her Warren home. “I am in the transition of moving.”
When asked to respond to potential accusations that is a lie, she says, “That [is not] true.”
Spranger is likely to be asked a handful of questions and evidence, such as tax payments and utility regularity, will be looked at.
The elections unit of the Secretary of State is who would be probing this if suspicion mounts. No word yet on if they are actively investigating.
