Monroe police say a man has been arrested in connection to an arson that killed a puppy on Friday night.

According to police, the fire happened about 5:09 p.m. in the 200 block of Willow St. Crews responded to the possible arson at the duplex, and found one of the apartments on fire.

They were able to put the fire out with the help of the Monroe Fire Department, Monroe Public Safety Department and Frenchtown Township Fire Department.

According to police, the apartment was unoccupied, but a Husky puppy in the apartment died in the fire. The other apartment was occupied by a woman and her two kids, but they were able to get out safely.

Police said a suspect was observed leaving the apartment just minutes before the fire. The 25-year-old man was located later on in the day by the Monroe Police Vice Unit.

That suspect is currently in jail on home invasion charges, but further charges are expected as they complete their investigation.
