Detectives with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office are trying to find out if the death of a 20-month-old girl is the result of a tragic accident or a crime.
Relatives identified the baby as Jazzabelle Fernandez.
An investigators says she died two to three hours after her mother rushed her to a local hospital.
The mother was not at the house when it happened.
Her boyfriend was home, with her four children, and called her at work after he says he woke up to a thud and found the baby in the basement, at the bottom of the stairs.
The mother raced home to transport her baby to the hospital, but the child later died.
Investigators say they are waiting on results of an autopsy to determine if a crime was committed or the baby's death was from an accidental fall.
