A Farmington Hills family safely made it out of their home when fire struck early Christmas Day.

The family home on Nottingwood Street, near Orchard Lake and 12 Mile Roads, was damaged, but no one was injured. The family inside included three children who all made it out.

Fire crews say the blaze broke out around 3 a.m. on Christmas day. They have not yet identified a cause, but say the fire started in the basement and parents smelled smoke as they wrapped gifts for their children.

Lt. Jamie Neufeld of the Farmington Hills Fire Department said, "Obviously, you don't want that on any night, but that is their present. They are out safe."
