Ferndale police arrest man with dozens of suspensions on his driving record

Posted

A lot of people get through life with their driver's license never being suspended or suspended once, but Ferndale police say they got into a chase with a man who has 53 suspensions on his record.

Jonas Smith, 57, was the man police were chasing early Sunday morning. The retired GM worker said he had to retire early because he was hurt on the job, but police say that hasn't stopped him from committing crimes.

Those crimes include fleeing and eluding police and retail fraud. Smith should not even be driving his 86-year-old mother's Buick, as he doesn't have a valid driver's license.

Smith was arraigned on charges Tuesday, and his mother said he has had trouble since he son died a year ago.
