A tribute to armed service veterans in Oakland Township is a step closer to reality.
The group behind the effort held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday at the site, which is located on Adams Road, south of Silverbell Road.
The total cost of the project is $2.3 million, which includes the cost of the 5-acre site, which was donated by the Moceri companies. Private donations and contributions will fund the construction and maintenance of the space.
"This isn't run by the government," said Tim Reese, a retired army colonel, who is executive director of The Veterans Tribute of Oakland Township (VTOT). "This is just private citizens getting together to do something for their community."
The Michigan chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America will be prominently featured at the site.
"Hopefully future generations will be inspired by the sacrifices made on their behalf to maybe give back in their way to their communities," said Mike Harris, who served in the U.S. Marine Corp. "It doesn't have to be through service to their country but everyone has God-given talents that can benefit the communities that they live in."
Six large glass panels will serve as the Tribute's focal point. They will be 14-feet tall and 4-feet wide and represent each branch of the Military Services.
U.S. Rep. Mike Bishop (R-Rochester) attended the ceremony and offered remarks to the dozens who gathered.
Horizontal construction, including foundation and electrical work will begin at the site in the next few weeks, according to Reese. The dedication ceremony is expected will be held in 2018, perhaps as early as Memorial Day or the fourth of July.
Corporate and individual donations are still being sought in a final push to reach the fundraising goal. Contributions are tax deductible. Information on how to donate is located on the non-profit organization's website.
