Hurricane Matthew cancels local couple's wedding

Posted

Shiloh Johnson and Thomas Bachmayer had been planning their special wedding day for the past 11 months.

The Rochester Hills couple were set to marry on a Saturday on an island off the Carolinas. The pair saved on some of the wedding costs by making their own wedding decorations and bouquets.

Then just days before the wedding they received news that Hurricane Matthew was heading toward the island.

The couple decided to make several back up plans in case they had to change venues several times and decided to bring generators and gas while watching the weather there closely.

When they arrived, they said it appeared the storm was moving in another direction. Then, they realized the hurricane was heading in their direction.

A mandatory evacuation forced them to leave the island and their dream wedding. The couple lost thousands of dollars in the catering bill and their rented beach house.

They spoke to 7 Action News about the whole ordeal.

“It makes you pay attention to the big stuff,” said Shiloh. “I see how people have lost their homes.”

According to Shiloh and Thomas, they are grateful none of their loved ones were harmed.

They are now back in Michigan and will be planning a simple ceremony soon.
