A 61-year-old man from Oak Park is charged with two counts of first degree murder and gun charges, accused of killing his sister-in-law and his wife.

Police identified the victims during court. They all lived together. Alice Richardson, 66, the defendant’s wife was shot in the head. Gay Richardson, 55, his sister-in-law, was stabbed repeatedly.

Police say Abdulwajid Akhenaton turned himself in and confessed to the killings.

Akhenaton allegedly told police that during an argument Gay Richardson grabbed a knife.  He knocked it out of her hand, beat, and stabbed her.

His wife and step-daughter returned home to find a bloody scene.

They went back to their car and tried to leave for safety. That is when Akhenaton came after them with a gun.

“He stated he wanted them to come back in the residence so he could go turn himself in to police,” said Det. Brian Barker of the Oak Park Police Department during an arraignment. “As the car began to pull away he fired one round into the window.”

That gunshot killed his wife. His step daughter was able to run to safety.

Akhenaton was denied bond due to the seriousness of the charges. He is scheduled to be back in court for a probably cause hearing on Sept. 29 at 1 p.m.  A preliminary examination is scheduled for Oct. 4.
