A woman got justice in Oakland County court Tuesday afternoon, after being brutally attacked and carjacked.
Judge Rae Lee Chabot sentenced 18-year-old Joshua Miller and 20-year-old Jasmine McReynolds to a minimum of 18 years behind bars for a plethora of charges.
The maximum penalty for each charge was 18 years and 9 months to 70 years, but she allowed all the charges to be served concurrently. She referred to the concurrent sentences as a ‘gift’ to the defendants, because they will be able to have a life after prison.
The crime happened back on January 21, 2015. McReynolds and Miller attacked the victim, carjacked her, and held her hostage while brutally beating her.
The victim was coming home from night classes when she was attacked outside of her Farmington Hills apartments.
She stood by while the prosecuting attorney read a prepared statement she wrote to the defendants.
"I have always lived by the quote, 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,' as well as 'Treat people how you would want to be treated.'Could you imagine someone doing this to someone you loved,” said a portion of the statement, read by attorney Kenneth Frazee.
She said her life has been changed forever.
The judge called the crime baffling, since when it happened neither Miller or McReynolds was drunk or on drugs and neither had a criminal record.
Both will have the opportunity to appeal the charges.
