Pontiac students say classrooms are cold

Parents at one Pontiac school say their kids have been wearing coats in their classrooms because there hasn't been enough heat.

The district says overall the building does have heat - but there are areas of concerns.

Some of the students told us the principal told them not to talk with us.

The boys and girls at International Technology Academy in Pontiac are learning how to keep warm in their cold classrooms.

We went inside to see how cold it was and did see some kids and staff members with coats and heavy sweaters on.

We were quickly directed to the superintendent of Pontiac Public Schools, when we started asking questions.

Then we got a statement saying at no time has the building been without heat, but that same statement goes on to say:

Due to the age of the boiler system the building has had some issues with some areas being colder than others. In addition, a circulation pump went out, causing the office areas to be cold. We have heard from both staff and parents regarding this issue. Maintenance staff and mechanical contractors are on site almost daily working to remedy the situation.

After a few more questions to the superintendent, we got another email saying the school has had ongoing boiler issues for years, with ongoing complaints from parents and staff. Problems are addressed as they are reported and they have been trying to pass a sinking fund to help repair or replace the systems.

We are waiting to hear how soon the issues will be fixed.

The district says they are hoping to get this recently reported problem fixed today.

We did ask if they will be closing the school or doing anything about the cold classrooms. We are waiting to hear back.

In the meantime, parents say they are going to make sure their kids have on layers.
