Troy's Teacher of the Year overwhelmed after being surprised with car

A Troy high school teacher gets a major surprise. She was awarded "Teacher of the Year" in the school district.

Kristy Pierce thought she was just getting flowers because it is her birthday. She had no idea she was given the honor of teacher of the year.

She said, "I was overwhelmed."

Kristy is a teacher at Athens High School and school officials surprised her in the middle of class. She was awarded a brand new car by the Suburban Collection.

"It doesn't feel real, it's like a dream."

Kristy was chosen by schools officials, other teachers, parents, and current and former students.

"Stunned! There are so many phenomenal teachers in this district," she explained. "To say that I am humbled by this honor is an understatement."

"She was chosen for someone who gave back more and seemed like she was having a meaningful impact on current and former students and they are the ones who came and rallied on her behalf," said Gary Allgeier of the Suburban Collection.

Kristy is known for giving back outside of the classroom as well, helping raise $155,000 during Charity Week earlier this month.

She said, "To see a group of people rally the way that this community did and to know that I can help to lead, that was so special."

Kristy's parents were in on the surprise.

"I was so proud of her. She works so hard at Athens," said Kristy's mom, Sherry.

Now, Kristy will get to drive away with more than just bragging rights.

Allgeier added, "Best shopping trip you can make, when you don't get a bill at the end."

The teacher will get to choose a car from 10 different brands and 30 different models from the Troy Motor Mall. Depending on the car, she will get to keep it for a two or three year lease.
