A Ferndale business owner had a brief dispute with city officials Wednesday after putting up a large sign in support of Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump.
Carlotta Cardenas attached the large Trump Pence sign to the fencing inside the Seasonal Corner Garden Center late Tuesday afternoon. A citizen complaint prompted a visit to the business by city officials and a phone call followed this morning.
Cardenas told 7 Action News the call was from Ferndale's code enforcers.
"They stated that the sign was too large for their ordinance and that I needed to take it down immediately," said Cardenas.
Instead, she went straight to city hall and lodged her own complaint.
"When I showed them other signs in the city that were bigger than mine they just said, you can keep it up for 7-to-10 days, you don't immediately have to take it down."
Jordan Twardy, Ferndale's director of community and economic development, said the election's timing was the reason for the change of heart by the city.
"Given that our typical practice being, we'll give you seven days to correct, the election is less time that that," Twardy said. "We're just not going to be a heavy on that, so we're not making her take it down."
People have certainly taken notice of the sign.
A Hillary Clinton for president sign was placed in the front of the business overnight. Cardenas also discovered two plastic bags containing animal feces attached to the fence in front of Trump sign when she arrived at her business this afternoon.
